My friend Jamie has 2 precious kids who share a birthday month. They recently went to Disney World and wanted to carry that theme over into their double birthday party. She asked me to make this cake that replicated one that she found on the internet. It was a chocolate cake with almond buttercream icing. The decorations are made from red and black rolled fondant.

Sushi
I was really excited about making this cake. It was for a former co-worker whose wife was pregnant. She had been craving sushi and since she was pregnant she couldn't have REAL sushi. So, for her birthday I made this sushi cake for her. It's a yellow cake with almond buttercream icing. It's covered with rolled fondant and the sushi is also made of fondant.

Here is a birthday cake for someone's surprise 30th birthday party. It's a 2 tiered cake. The bottom tier is chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream icing and the top is yellow cake with white buttercream icing. Both layers are covered with black fondant. The candles are also made of colored fondant. The 30 on top of the cake in the second picture is made of a fondant and gumpaste mixture. It isn't in the first picture because it broke right before the party, so I had to improvise. Oh well.

The Knights
This cake was made as a favor to my husband. His boss's father was coming in town to meet with a group of his high school friends. This cake represents their high school fraternity (the Knights), symbol (the shield), and colors (black and gold). The "Skip" written on the cake is LSU's own Skip Bertman. I'm an LSU fan so I think that's pretty cool.
The cake is chocolate and it's filled and iced with chocolate buttercream icing. The cake is decorated with fondant and piped with black buttercream icing.

Kentucky Derby Hat
Another co-worker was leaving us and moving to Kentucky. And what could be more Kentucky than the Kentucky Derby? No self respecting southern lady could attend the Kentucky Derby without having a proper hat to wear...well, in this case, eat.
This was a chocolate cake with chocolate icing covered in white fondant. The daisies and fantasy flowers are made of a mixture of gumpaste and fondant.

Cody's Turning 1
This cake was made for my friend Kelly's son, Cody. For his first birthday we made a yellow cake with almond buttercream filling and icing in 2 shades of blue. The yellow polka dots are made of fondant.
And, no, we didn't use alphabet shaped cake pans. This was hand carved from 2 sheet cakes. Look out Ace of Cakes!
Baby Shower Cake
This cake was made for one of Trecy's best friends. She's having a baby boy in March. This is a white cake with chocolate buttercream filling. The top and bottom layers are covered with almond buttercream and the middle is chocolate buttercream. The baby's monogram is icing on a fondant plate. The bow on top is also made of fondant.
Christmas Cakes
These two cakes were made for Christmas gatherings.

The second cake is also a yellow cake filled with buttercream icing. It's iced smoothly with almond buttercream icing. Santa and Rudolph are made from sculpted fondant.

Baby Cakes...Cakes For All Occasions
My name is Dana McKinney. I'm from New Orleans but now live on the Northshore of Lake Ponchartrain in Louisiana. I've been married for almost 5 years and have 1 beautiful daughter. I'm a Speech Language Pathologist who recently became interested in cake decorating. In August of 2008 my daughter turned 1 and I wanted to make her first birthday special. Her name is Quinlan Kelly. I wanted to incorporate her wonderfully unique name into her birthday celebration so, I decided that her cake should be in the shape of a 'Q'. At that time I had had no training in the area of cake decorating, but I had been watching LOTS of cake decorating shows. I figured why not...I'd give it a shot. Well, I did it. Her cake was as cute as can be and a new passion had been discovered. A few months, and cakes, later Baby Cakes came to be.
My friend Trecy Brown (pronounced Tracy) and I have been baking together since then and our business is just getting off the ground.
Trecy is also from New Orleans and after a stint in Tennessee as a teenager she moved back to Louisiana and migrated to the Northshore also. She and I have been friends for almost 10 years. Trecy is has been married for 7 years and has two sweet boys. She's a Dental Assistant, but like me, would rather be baking.
